Sweelinckpassage, Amsterdam
Art and advertising in one. Placed here during the weekend of 29-30 October by artist Maggie, who has her studio less than half a minute's walk from here in Tweede Jacob van Campenstraat. On the internet you find her at www.maggieworks.com/home.html.The note on the easel (below the canvas, that is) advertises the event "Open Ateliers De Pijp" [Open Studios in the Pijp], which takes place every two years during one weekend (in 2011 it was on Saturday 29 and Sunday 30 October). During that weekend artists in the Amsterdam neighbourhood known as the Pijp open their studios to the public during the afternoons, display their recent work (which is usually for sale), and answer whatever questions you have -- all very informally (at several locations you may be offered tea, coffee, biscuits or even wine). This year (2011) there were over 70 locations to be visited, but it is best to start at the central exhibition, where one work of each participating artist is to be seen, and select the ones that take your fancy. This year and during the last few editions the central exhibition was at Oranjekerk (located centrally in the Pijp at Van Ostadestraat 149; the entrance is around the corner in Tweede Van der Helststraat). More information (in Dutch) is on the website www.openateliersdepijp.nl.
